Are Sunset & Sunrise Photos Cliché?

The term cliché is used to describe a phrase, expression, or idea that has been overused to the point of losing its intended force or novelty, especially when at some time it was considered distinctively forceful or unique. It is a somewhat common opinion that sunrise and sunset images are subject to this definition. And, while I agree that sunrise and sunset photos are certainly a mature subject and yes, even cliché, I just can’t resist them. Being present to witness their beauty is a spiritual experience each and every time. Just like snowflakes, no two are alike. The sunrise and sunset photos below were shot on my recent trip to Chincoteague, VA. I especially enjoyed the foggy mornings that limited the visibility and simplified the scenes creating a peaceful and abstract quality. Please forgive me if these images are cliché … I just couldn’t help myself! (Scroll down to see more posts about Chincoteague; ‘Wild Ponies & Other Creatures’ and ‘Chincoteague Trees’.)

  1. Not cliché at all. Very beautiful.

  2. Denise, I think the cliché about sunrises/sunsets is that so many ho-hum ones are posted. If everyone posted beautiful–and different–ones like you did, people wouldn’t get tired of them. These are beautiful. 🙂

  4. Love the soft quality of the comps and the light…. never cliche’ when done right.

  6. Well, one can call them ‘cliche’ , but i prefer the term “classic” when it comes to sunsets and sunrises… i enjoy such photography, no matter what 😉

  7. Really beautiful images, Denise.

  8. Loved revisiting our trip. Made me think of stumbling along that trail by flashlight but boy, was it worth it. As I said to you that morning, Al Horner would have loved it. Great work, D!

  13. I know this web site provides quality based content and other material, is there any other
website which presents these kinds of things in quality?

Like the ‘watercolour painting’ feel of the sunrise images. The Fishing Shack is so strong compositionally but also so evocative. A place to sit for the day and commune with nature.
