Photos Of Sculptures That Look Like Paintings

12Aug13

Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ is a fun place to visit and shoot. I really love the sculptures by J. Seward Johnson, many of which are taken from famous paintings by artists like Manet, Monet, Renoir and others. Here I show just a few images that amuse my sensibilities. Not only do the sculptures look like paintings, but the photographs look like paintings too. The color palette is different from what my camera is used to and I like looking at them. I could not find reference to all of the work so have changed the titles to my own just as Johnson renamed his sculptures independent of the paintings. I was thinking that (in a way) the images could be considered 3rd generation art. But of course, all of the credit goes to Johnson, and the original masters!

Thanks Larry! It’s a fun place to practice composing in camera since the subjects don’t move!

  4. One thing I love about the Grounds for Sculpture are the ones that turn some of my favorite paintings into things you can walk right up to and almost be a part of. Nice set of photographs.

  5. Denise,

Your thoughts are inspiring and the last two sculptures are new to me. I can’t wait to visit Grounds for Sculpture this year as a field trip.

Nice set of images. Laguna Beach has been doing something similar since the 30s, called the Pageant of the Masters. It’s a stage performance where people come on stage and pose a series of masterpiece paintings, along with narration and a live orchestra. I saw it once in the 70s and it was pretty interesting.
