Evolution Of A Sunset

As the sun lowered itself past the horizon a peaceful calm came over the bay. I could hear the sea birds and waterfowl calling to one another while settling in for the night. The sun painted the sky with a beautiful pastel gradient of color that deepened with every second. I used my 6-stop neutral density filter to lengthen the exposures and capture the passing of time. At the end of the light show the sky glowed with a brilliant warm red that made the scene seem surreal before passing into the night.

My passion for photography has rewarded me with the opportunity to examine the world carefully. My approach is intuitive and I choose to impose no constraints – leaving myself open only to possibilities. As a professional designer I am drawn to images that offer a strong composition, pattern and rhythm. Creating images with a unique perspective while sometimes pushing the limits of traditional composition 'rules' excites me. Landscapes, nature subjects and things from the past are common themes in my work.

    1. Thanks Rich. That was what I was going for! I actually think that the simple sunset (without any cloud patterns) probably worked best with the posts, to keep it from looking too busy.

  1. Another sunset? Only if their unconventional and a little unusual such as these. That being said # 3 got me, dreamy, surreal, slightly narcotic; great opening shot for the second installment of “True Detective” with maybe some acoustic Delta blues guitar and a gruesome object in the water.

  2. Wonderful pictures. Personally, I never tire of sunsets, in person or in photographs. To me, they’re the most beautiful visual phenomena in the world.

  3. Reblogged this on Whereof One Can Speak and commented:
According to Wikipedia, “Barnegat Bay is a small brackish arm of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 30 miles long, along the coast of Ocean County, New Jersey”. That doesn’t sound very inviting, but a talented photographer can make of it something like this.

      1. My blog’s followers are a strange, twisted bunch so it’s hard to say what they’ll appreciate, but I should point out that it wasn’t the New Jersey reference that sounded uninviting to me (being a longtime resident), it was the “small brackish arm”….

  4. I’m a sucker for sunsets. #3 was the sweet spot of the sunset no doubt; really like this one. But I also like the sliver of reflected orange in the distant shoreline in #4. I’m thinking cropping the foreground (a good third of the image) of that one to make it more pano would draw attention to that reflection. I very much like the contrast of close and distant posts in that one too.

    1. Seems like everyone likes sunsets except for the people that call them cliche´! In the last I think I didn’t want to crop the poles but the shadows there are just as dark so it probably doesn’t matter. Where the horizon falls might be a concern.

  5. I am a point and click person. 😦 Somebody (husband) is always telling me to hurry up and take the picture. I delete half or more of what I take. But I do enjoy looking at beautiful pictures. I like the goals/purpose of your blog as stated in your ABOUT. 🙂
