Iceland V

If you have been following my Iceland posts you are learning how diverse this country is. It is what surprised me most. Here I show more diversity, this time in black & white. Some of the scenes just seemed to call for it. It was fun to see all the different land formations that years of volcanic activity and erosion provided. A field with odd mounds that looked like pyramids interested me as did some sea stacks, similar to those found in our pacific northwest. It seemed obvious that many of the formations were relatively new, especially compared to the rounder more weathered Appalachian Mountains I am so familiar with. In the lagoon, glacier chunks, layered with volcanic material waited their turn to be washed out to sea. Following the Ring Road, the sea was never far away and we were happy to be graced by its company as we traveled. I found Iceland to be magnificent in its diversity and long to go back each time I process another image.

Iceland IV

I suppose as long as I am finding more images from Iceland to process I will keep posting them. It was a nice surprise and highlight to find the little hillside shacks among the beautiful scenery. I have already included several in preceding posts. We named some of the shacks ‘troll houses’ … that’s what they looked like to us. The Icelandic people believe in trolls, fairies, elves and such, and when you look at the landscape you can see why … it’s full of places for these fantasies to live. I loved their crude and simple designs and since shacks have always been a fun subject for me I was pleased to have the chance to photograph them. The homes and architecture is Scandinavian feeling … very simple in design. Sheep dot the hillsides throughout the country and I imagine there must be more sheep than people in Iceland. Wool products and lamb are one of the main products along with fishing. There’s also an abundance of the Icelandic horses grazing in large groups or among the sheep. I guess we would call them ponies here … they’re small, adorable, have long manes and tails, and no two look alike. On the last full day we went to the Strokkur Geyser. It was raining but determined to get the shot I stuck it out and gave it several tries. No matter how ready I thought I was, I jumped each time it erupted … every four to eight minutes. Finally some random landscapes end the post and I couldn’t resist including another image from the iceberg beach. (This time a vertical.) Photographing there just might have been my favorite place of all.
