Something/Anything Different

While exploring some high-elevation jeep roads this spring we came upon a grove of trees that called to me. Huddled together on a hill and without leaves they seemed to be there for some purpose. The threatening sky added interest and I had fun composing images before the thunder and lightning started.

Trees are a popular and mature photographic subject, much like flowers, mountains or bodies of water. For me what sets a worthy main subject apart is something/anything visually different from the ordinary. The ‘extra something’ I respond to might be the quality of light, shape, color, pattern, grouping, balance, setting or relation to other subjects… just to name a few.

The B&W is AWESOME!!!! LOVE it! 🙂

    • Thanks Deb. I was especially fond of ‘Silhouettes in B&W’. In NJ I was always looking for trees up on a hill with nothing but sky behind them, with no success. If I could just remember where this was! 🙂

  2. As a fellow tree lover I’m enjoying this set of images immensely. You not only tell the story of this little grove by your image choices, they each are great photographs that stand on their own. As you said in the second paragraph, when dealing with a mature subject, you need to find and capture something different and you did. It’s good to see you getting to know your new home. I for one am looking forward to seeing more of it.

  3. Works equally well in color or B&W…I especially like the road shot here.

It will be an adventure for all of us to see your new home. 🙂 Lovely trees.

  5. I always want to go down the road to see what’s next. Great morning coffee viewing. Miss you.

  7. Enjoyed these, especially “Road Among The Trees”

  8. Your shots are awesome. Thanks!

  9. Love the clouds in Under Parted Sky.

    • It has been great being able to watch the sky, especially here in the mountains where it changes quickly and throughout the day. Thanks for looking… I have been wondering where you have been lately.

  10. You’re two B&Ws are very powerful images. I also find trees compelling subject matter. Their graceful lines, textured bark and leaves are not only visually compelling, but also represent so much about life on our planet. Nice work.

  11. Hi Denise,

Love the post. My favorites are Entwined and Silhouettes. I find that showing them in bw allows us to look at the shape, line and form. Very beautiful.
