While looking over some of my work from past months I noticed that grids have been showing up. (Just see the previous two posts!) Here’s another grid … a found still-life. I like the mystery of the numbers in this. What does “82” mean? And whose red shoes are those? Don’t ask me … because I don’t know! Observations about common themes and ideas in your work can be both enlightening and stimulating. It can tell you a little something about yourself and your work that you may not have realized before. As an artist you have the opportunity to use that new-found knowledge creatively, by exploring the ideas in more depth.
In our digital age many photographers store their images on a computer without a way to look at them together, as a whole. I use this blog like I would a journal and enjoy that I can scroll back over time and see where I’ve been and where I’m going. I also organize my web gallery so I can look back and see the year’s work. I recently learned that printing your work out, as small as 4 x 6 can be a good practice. This enables you to lay several out in front of you for comparison and to see a body of work, or series as a whole.
